Program Information

Peace Patrol is a peacekeeping program designed to support the creation and maintenance of peace and security in middle and high schools by training students to engage in activities intended to create lasting peace. The goals of this program include reducing violence, the rate of office referrals, suspensions and expulsions; creating a peaceful and positive learning environment; and instilling valuable, lifelong skills that prepare students to become productive citizens.

Activities

Observation and Monitoring
Students are trained to enter and observe areas when and where conflict commonly occurs (hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, gym locker rooms, bus lanes, stairwells, between classes, before and after school, etc.) and monitor the interactions that occur in these areas. This peacekeeping operation serves as both a deterrent and prevention strategy for reducing violence.

Intervention
If the peacekeepers encounter a conflict with a student or between students, they are trained and equipped to intervene in order to keep the conflict from escalating. They accomplish this by a.) alerting the conflict party/parties to their presence, and b.) persuading the party/parties to consider an alternate course of action (peer mediation, conflict coaching, talking to a trusted adult, mentoring, taking a time out, etc.). If safety is a concern, the peacekeepers are trained to alert the program coordinator, school security officer, or other adult.

Facilitation
Peacekeepers assist students by facilitating a referral to resources within the school (i.e. Pecemakers, Peace Now, Power-Up, Peace Restored, school counselor or nurse etc.) or community that can provide assistance to the student or students.

Oversight
Peacekeepers provide oversight by following-up with students to ensure they are receiving the services or assistance needed. If there is a need for additional services, the Peacekeepers will notify the program coordinator of the issue.

Program Coordinator Training

This training course will provide you as the program coordinator with the ability to prepare your school peacekeepers as outlined in the 2021 Peace Peddler's “Recommended Standards for School-Based Peacekeeping.”

These standards serve three main goals:

1. To guide the conduct of student peacekeepers;

2. To inform students of the resources available to them;

3. To promote confidence in the peacekeeping process.

In addition to providing guidance in using the standards, this course will assist you in program development, management, and evaluation. Following its successful completion, you will be certified to provide on-site coordination of the Peace Patrol program and training of students.
